The resort of Puerto de la Cruz is also an historic town in the north of the Canarian Island of Tenerife. Unlike some of the more modern resorts that have sprung up around the island, Puerto de la Cruz offers plenty for the visitor to see, whether you like churches or theme parks and gardens.
A visit to the Loro Parque is a must with its 135,000 square metres of tropical gardens and its 7000 palm trees. The parque is home to the biggest collection of parrots of different kinds all over the world, The parque boasts a huge artificial iceberg that is home to a large collection of penguins and the biggest dolphinarium in the whole of Europe.
The Plaza del Charco is the heart of the town and has functioned as a town square since the eighteenth century and there is some attractive eighteenth century architecture around the plaza. The Iglesias de San Francisco, originally the chapel of John the Baptist was built towards the end of the sixteenth century and is well worth a visit. There are plenty more places of interest to be seen in the resort besides all of the beach activities that are available including boat trips and water skiing. If you like dolphins and whales then you should take the boat trip out to see where they are gathered. You should visit the botanical gardens and the Banana plantations and gardens before the end of your holiday, no matter what else you may have missed.
